994, Private John MULLUMBY — 8th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born at Cashel, Co. Tipperary, c.1825.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Cahir on the 14th of March 1846.

Age: 21.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: None.

Sallow complexion. Grey eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial at Chobham on the 11th of August 1853 for "being drunk on duty". Sentenced to 56 days imprisonment, but 30 days of this was remitted.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Wilson Kennedy" on the 2nd of May 1854.

Tried by a District Court-martial on the 18th of August 1855 for "being found asleep on his post." Awarded 50 lashes, but this sentence was remitted.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 28th of August 1855 for "being drunk when ordered to be in readiness for a turn-out". Found "Not guilty."

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Transferred to the 19th Hussars on the 1st of November 1863. Regimental No. 647.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Canterbury on the 29th of March 1870.

"Reduction of the Army and being found unfit for further service. Debility — was ordered home, invalided, from India, on this account. The result of 12 years' service in India. He is now too feeble for foreign service and yet it is impossible to say how soon he may recover his strength. Disability not permanent, but at present will interfere with his ability of earning his livelihood."

Served 23 years 91 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 10 months

In India: 12 years 10 months.

Conduct: "Indifferent. Very much addicted to drink." Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Forty times entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Three times tried by Court-martial.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal, clasps for Alma and Sebastopol, Turkish Medal and the Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

To live at Newpark, Cashel, after discharge.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Served at Kotah and Gwalior.
