Birth & early life

Born at Dunannon, Co. Roscommon, c.1835.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Leamington Priors on the 8th of January 1855.

He had previously served as No. 1698 in the Warwick Militia.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Blacksmith.

Sallow complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 29th of July 1855.

Sent to Scutari on the 1st of October and rejoined the regiment on the 14th of November 1855.

Transferred to the 2nd Dragoon Guards at Dundalk on the 31st of January 1857. Regimental No. 274.

Promoted to Farrier (as Sergeant): 4th of February 1860.

"In confinement," tried by a Regimental Court-martial and reduced to Private on the 17th of August 1861. Was also imprisoned until the 26th of September 1861.

Promoted Farrier (as Sergeant) on the 18th of July 1864.

Re-engaged for a further twelve years' service in the 1st of October 1866.

In confinement, tried by a Regimental Court-martial for "being drunk in camp" and reduced to Private on the 8th of November 1866.

Appointed Shoeing-Smith on the 1st of October 1869.

Promoted to Farrier (as Sergeant) on the 1st of February 1871.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Leeds on the 13th of April 1875: "As an indulgence, at his own request, after 21 years' service."

Served 21 years 87 days. In Turkey and the Crimea 9 months. East Indies, 12 years 1 month.

Half service in the Militia (2 years 119 days) allowed to reckon towards pension (1 year 60 days.).

Conduct: "Fair."

In possession of four Good Conduct badges.

Six times entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Twice tried by Court-martial

To live, c/o. the "Pension's Office", Leeds.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, Turkish Medal and the Mutiny medal with clasp for Lucknow.

Served at Newabgungee and Koorsee.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
