The muster rolls for the July-September 1858 period show no particular service movement shown during the whole of the period, only that he was a "Prisoner from the 1st of August — 4th of September".

In action against the rebels at Zeerapore on the 29th of February 1859 and at Baroda on the 1st of January 1859.
W0/25/3251 shows him as "To England for discharge, 11th of December 1859" and the muster roll confirms the date of sailing as the 16th of December 1859.
Granted "Free discharge" from Maidstone on the 5th of April 1860. To live in London.

In an Account and Address Book formerly belonging to James W. Wightman when he was Secretary of the Balaclava Commemoration Society, Paine's address was given as No. 58 Wellesley Road, Kentish Town, London.
His name in the list of members was crossed through and "Dead" written alongside, but no indication as to just when. The only other reference is to a letter having been sent to him on the 8th of April 1880.
