Birth & early life

Born at Churchill near Bristol, Somerset.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Cork on the 2nd of December 1854.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 9".

Trade: Labourer.

Features: Fair complexion. Brown eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 16th of July 1855.

The musters for July-September 1858 show him as being "On Field Service" from September of the period.

Imprisoned from the 4th of August — 3rd of September 1858, for "absence".

Imprisoned from the 11-12 of October 1861 for "being drunk and absent".

Transferred to the 21st Hussars on the 30th of November 1864. Regimental No. 808.

Transferred to the Depot Troop of the 6th Dragoon Guards at Canterbury from Netley Hospital on the 1st of February 1867. Regimental No. 703.

Discharge & pension

Discharged "invalided," from Aldershot on the 7th of January 1873:

"Unfit for general service from general debility — caused and aggravated by climate and exposure in and by the Service when performing military duties in the Crimea and India. Is weak and emaciated — likely to be permanent and can contribute but little towards his livelihood."

Served 17 years 361 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 2 monthsIn India: 8 years 8 months.

Conduct "good", in possession of one Good Conduct badge.

Seventeen times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Once tried by Court-martial.

[EJB: Pipe could not write, and had to make his mark on his discharge papers.]

Aged 37 years 1 month on discharge.

To live in Langford, near Bristol.

Medals & commemorations

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean and Turkish medals.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Can find no trace on the Mutiny medal roll.

Life after service

[RM: Both the 1881 and 1901 Census show many related family members with this surname in Churchill, Somerset.
