Born at Stafford.
Enlisted at Lichfield on the 21st of January 1851.
Age: 18.
Height: 5' 7".
Trade: Labourer.
At Varna on the 20th of September 1854.
Sent to Scutari on the 26th of October 1854.
Died there on the 11th of December 1854.
Next of kin: Mother, Ann Pratt, living in Lichfield, Staffs.
His name is on the Alma/Inkerman roll, but with no entry for the award of either clasp, (the dates of his being at Varna and being sent to Scutari would obviate this) neither is he shown on the Balaclava clasp roll. In the "Remarks" column of the former are the details of his being at Varna, date of being sent to Scutari, date of death, and the initials, "W.O." (A medal to War Office, perhaps.) He is also not entered on the Sebastopol clasp roll, but from his service he would have been entitled at least this.
An impressed naming medal with clasps for Balaclava and Sebastopol was sold by Wallis and Wallis at their auction in 1965.
His Crimean medal, with clasps for Balaclava and Sebastopol, was known to be in an English collection in 1977.
