907, Arthur PYE — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born at Clapham, London.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 3rd of September 1837.

No other enlistment details apart from his trade as a mason are shown.

At Scutari from the 4th of April — 11th of May 1855.

Died at Balaclava on the 15th of July 1855.

He had been tried by a Regimental, Court-martial for "using insubordinate lingo [sic] to a superior," on the 12th of July 1855 and given 50 lashes. (It is a matter of supposition if this flogging had any bearing on his death.)

Next of kin: Father, James Pye, living in Clapham, London.

Entitled, according to the medal rolls, to the Crimean medal with clasps for Inkerman and Sebastopol. Lummis and Wynn also credit him with having the clasp for the Alma, but the medal roll states that he was at Varna on the day of that battle. The muster roll shows no trace of his ever having been away from the regiment during this period.

(The manuscript record of the "E.E. Needes of Highgate" collection sold in 1939/40, shows his medal as having the two clasps as known, being named to "A. Pye. 4th Dragns." and with the addenda of "Note. Very scarce combination of clasps to cavalry. Verified,"
