Birth & early life

Born in Ross, Co. Kilkenny.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dublin on the 22nd of December 1847.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Labourer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Sent to the Cavalry Depot on the 19th of April 1854.

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Jura" and joined the regiment on the 21st of October 1854.

He was Batman to Lt. the Lord Killeen when in the Crimea.

Sent to Scutari (no date shown) and to England on the 23rd of March 1855.



May 1855: Invalided to England, with others, including 1513 John Kilvert, 11th Hussars. Notice he is named "Edward".

Transferred to the 12th Lancers following re-engagement for 12 years' further service at Canterbury on the 11th of September 1860. Regimental No. 576.

"Claimed, after termination of second period of limited engagement."

Served 24 years 22 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 5 months

In India: 2 years 1 month.

Conduct: "fair."

In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

Thirty-one times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Once tried by Court-martial.

Confined, 2nd-6th January 1864. Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 7th of January and imprisoned until the 6th of February 1864.

Aged 44 years 4 months on discharge.

To live in Dublin.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Lummis and Wynn state "No clasps," but he is to be found on the Sebastopol clasp roll.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Served at Kotah.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean, Turkish, and Indian Mutiny medals.
