1307, Sergeant James ROYAL — 11th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born in Burnley, Lancashire.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Manchester on the 17th of November 1848.

Age: 18. Height . 5' 8".

Trade: Cloth-draper.

Fair complexion. Grey eyes. Fair hair.

Service, discharge & pension

From Private to Corporal: 15th of December 1854.

Corporal to Sergeant: 25th of May 1855.

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 12th of May 1857, as"Unfit from impaired general health due to venereal disease. Neglect in not reporting in proper time."

Served 10 years 135 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 2 years.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of one Good Conduct badge.

Awarded a pension of 10d. per day for two years.

(He was living in the No. 1 West London Pension District after discharge and he is shown as "Struck off" in the Pension Books for the District from the 8th of February 1858. (The District Pension Book also records that a communication was received regarding his been struck off the pension list under No. 99000/413.)

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.

Documents confirm "Present at the Siege and capture of Sebastopol."

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.

Further information

He re-enlisted into the Bengal Artillery of the East India Company at Warley Barracks on the 15th of December 1857, his number being 4036 and engaging for a twelve year period of service. Appointed Acting-Sergeant he embarked aboard the "Nimrod" at Gravesend and arrived in India on the 14th of April 1858. Sometime between that date and the 10th of July 1858 he transferred to the 1st Bengal European Cavalry and had been appointed to the rank of Troop Sergeant Major. Just when he did so cannot now be discovered as no records for the period have survived.

The India Office records show that he died from "Ulcers and Apoplexy" at Allahabad on the 10th of July 1858 and was buried in the same day by the Revd. J. Mackay.
