Birth & early life

Born at Keston, near Bromley, Kent.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 13th of April 1839.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 10.

Trade: None shown.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Tried and imprisoned by Court-martial from the 1st of September — 4th of December 1841.

From Military Train records:

"Tried by D.C.M in September of 1841, but the proceedings were not forwarded and are not in the possession of the Military Train."

1851 Census

Pockthorpe Cavalry Barracks, Norwich.

Robert Rumsby, aged 31, unmarried, Soldier, Corporal, born Bromley, Kent.

From Private to Corporal: 22nd of October 1849.

Corporal to Sergeant: 11th of October 1853.

At Varna during September and October and in hospital at Scutari from the 10th of November and December of 1854., and through January-April of 1855 before rejoining the regiment on the 11th of May.

Spent 23 days in hospital during October and was at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, on Detached Duty from the 6th of November 1855.

Transferred to the 3rd Bn. of the Military Train on the 13th of October 1856. Regimental No, 519.

Transferred to the 1st Bn. on the 1st of April 1857.

Appointed to Troop Sergeant Major on the 21st of December 1860.

Resigned to Sergeant "at his own request, " on the 17th of March 1862.

Discharge & pension

Discharged at Montreal, Canada, on the 2nd of December 1863 at "Own request, after 24 years' service."

Served 24 years 141 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 2 years. British North America, 2 years. England, 20 years 140 days.

Conduct: "very good". Once tried by Court-martial.

Aged 44 years 7 months on discharge.

Awarded a pension of 2/- per day.

To live in Montreal, Canada, after discharge.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean and Turkish medals.

Death & burial

Died in Montreal, Canada, on the 3rd of March 1868.
