1279, Private George RUMENS — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born in London.

Note: 1904 Despar Rumens, who was serving in the 3rd Light Dragoons in 1857, may have been brother [see below]. This man died at Newbridge, Ireland, on the 23rd of July 1858. Born in Hackney, London, his trade had been that of a grocer. George Rumens named one of his children, born c.1866, Despar.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 18th of July 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Clerk.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea from the Brighton Depot on the 29th of April 1855.

Shown on a nominal roll of officers and men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 28th of July.

Sent to Ismid on the 19th of November 1855.

Transferred to the 3rd Light Dragoons at Dublin on the 1st of March 1857. Regimental No. 1.

Note: There was a 1904 Despar Rumens serving in the 3rd Light Dragoons at this time [1857]. Possibly a brother, and the reason for his transfer. This man died at Newbridge, Ireland, on the 23rd of July 1858. Born in Hackney, London, his trade had been that of a grocer.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "Invalided", from Aldershot on the 21st of November 1865.

Awarded a pension of 9d. per day for a period of 2 years 9 months.

To live in Edinburgh after discharge, but he was living in the East London Pension District in 1868.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

The 1881 Census shows George Rumens, aged 44, born Clapton, Middx, a Chemist, living with his wife Margaret, 40, born Scotland, and sons Despar John Rumens, 15; Walter, 11; and Fred, 9. [RM]

1891 Census

4, Green Lane, Pilkington, Whitefield.

George Rumens, aged 55, Chemical Operative, born Hackney.

Margaret, 50.

Two sons shown: Walter H., 21, & Frederick W., 19. Also 2 lodgers.

1901 Census

21 Green Lane, Whitefield.

George Rumens, 66, Army Pensioner, born Hackney, Middlesex.

Margaret, 60, born Edinburgh.

One son shown: Frederick, 29, and a lodger.

Margaret Rumens, 81, March Quarter 1922, Prestwich.
