Birth & early life

Born at Stockport on the 11th of December 1828.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Manchester on the 12th of December 1846.

Made his "mark" on enlistment, but signed his discharge documents in a good hand.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Labourer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Hazel eyes. Brown hair.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 28th of May 1855.

Corporal to Sergeant: 18th of September 1857.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Manchester on the 20th of December 1860 "by claim, with the right of registry for a deferred pension of 4d. per day upon reaching the age of 50 years."

Served 14 years 8 days. In Bulgaria and the Crimea, 2 years.

Conduct: "very good". He was in possession of two Good Conduct badges when promoted to Sergeant

Never entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Aged 32 years 8 months on discharge.

To live in Chapel Walk, Sheffield.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman, Sebastopol. and the Turkish medal.

Appears in the 1851 Census at Queen's Barracks, Ipswich. [RM]
