1519, Private Matthew SHARPE — 11th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born in Brighton, Sussex.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Nottingham on the 1st of December 1851.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Cooper.

At Scutari General Depot from the 22nd of September 1854 and sent to rejoin the regiment on the 23rd of November.

Tried by a District Court-martial on the 4th of October 1855 for "being asleep on his post." Given 50 lashes.

Transferred to the 8th Hussars at Hounslow on the 13th of September 1857.

Regimental No. 94.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Returned to England aboard the "Renown"

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "time expired, " from York on the 29th of June 1864.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of one Good Conduct badge.

Entitled (according to the medal rolls) to the Crimean medal with clasps for Inkerman, Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.

(It is difficult to confirm his entitlement to the Inkerman clasp, as the musters would suggest that he was at Scutari at the time of this battle.)

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Served at Kotah, 22-30 of March and at Gwalior, 19-23 of June 1858.
