Birth & early life

Born in Manchester.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Manchester on the 3rd of May 1848.

Age: 18 years 10 months.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Black-smith.

Dark complexion. Hazel eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 1st of February 1855.

Sent to Scutari General Hospital on the 5th of April 1855 and invalided to England on the 23rd of June.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 28th of March 1857 for "being drunk in camp," and reduced to Private

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 12th of May 1857:

"Being unfit for further service from unhealthy constitution — ailing with complaint of obscure note. Is flat-footed and suffers from a violent cough and pain over false ribs attributable to a fall from his horse of which no report was made at the time, nor do I consider well-founded.

Never likely to become efficient."

Served 9 years 10 days.

In Bulgaria: 2 months.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 3 months.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of one Good Conduct badge.

He was granted a pension of 6d. per day for 2 years.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman, and Sebastopol.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with four clasps.
