Birth & early life

Born in the parish of Cannington, near Bristol, Somerset. He was baptised there on the 7th of March 1817, the son of Thomas Stone, a carpenter, and his wife. Mary.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 28th of July 1836.

Age: 19.

Height: 5'7".

Trade: Carpenter.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Embarked for India on the 21st of November 1836.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 24th of May 1855

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dublin on the 9th of April 1864: "At own request, free to pension."

Served 26 years 325 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 2 months

In India: 1 year 7 months.

Conduct: "has been good since 1860," Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges. 10 entries in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Nine times tried by Court-martial.

Tried and imprisoned:

1st of February — 6th of March 1839

10th of July — 26th of August 1839.

6th-26th of October 1843

1st-12th of August 1844.

26th of December 1844 — 16th of January 1845. 16th of October — 26th of November 1849. 10th of February — 26th of March 1856.

(This was by a District Court-martial for "habitual drunkenness" at which he was awarded 42 days imprisonment with hard labour, and to forfeit 1d. per day for six months.) 18-24 of March 1864.

To live in Bridgwater, Somerset.

He was granted a pension of 9d. per day.

Aged 47 years 8 months on discharge.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal.
