1421, Private John STRUT, STRUTT — 11th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born at Holt, Norfolk.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Norwich on the 16th of December 1848.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Sawyer.

Wounded in action at Balaclava.

The muster rolls for October shows him as "In hospital, wounded", for November as being "At the Veterinary Depot", and for December as being "In hospital".

He died at Kadikoi on the 1st of February 1855. There is no indication if this was from wounds, or sickness.

No next-of-kin are shown.

He was buried in the 11th Hussar Cemetery on the road between Kadikoi and Karani. (See copy of the memorial inscription in the 11th Hussar file)

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava and Sebastopol.
