Birth & early life

Born at Horsham, Sussex.

Enlisted into the 14th Light Dragoons at London on the 30th of October 1842. No Regimental number was allocated.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 9,"

Trade: Carpenter.

Service

Transferred to the 4th Hussars from Canterbury Depot on the 1st of May 1843.

Sent to the Cavalry Depot on the 14th of July 1854.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 14th of June 1855.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "by purchase", from Brighton on the 26th of June 1856. Payment of £10,

Served 13 years 226 days.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of one Good Conduct badge.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, this being sent to the Mint on the 15th of January 1857 and (presumably) to him on the 24th of March 1857.

Lummis and Wynn state that "he did not embark for the Crimea," but he is to be found on the Sebastopol clasp rolls. He is named on these as "Jas.W." and "Jas."
