Birth & early life

Born at Hethersett, near Wymondham, Norfolk.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 13th of November 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 9".

Trade: Mason.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

Transferred to the 3rd Dragoon Guards at Cahir on the 31st of August 1856. Regimental No. 192.

Re-engaged into the 17th Lancers at Colchester on the 29th of June 1867. Regimental No. 1113.

Former service in the 4th Light Dragoons and the 3rd Dragoon Guards allowed to reckon towards pension — vide War Office Authority dated the 15th of July 1867.

From Private to Corporal: 21st of February 1872.

Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of September 1873.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dublin on the 13th of November 1874.

"Having completed his second term of limited engagement."

Served 21 years 54 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year. East Indies 9 years 6 months.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of three Good Conduct badges when promoted and would now have had four,

Eight times entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Once tried by Court-martial.

"Absent" from the 28th of June — 1st of August. Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and imprisoned for 30 days.

Aged 39 years 6 months on discharge.

To live, C/o. Samuel Fowles, Gamekeeper, Hempstead, near Holt, Norfolk. Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with one clasp and the T.M.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
