Born in the parish of St. Mary's, Guildford. His father was probably William Spreadborough of Farnham, who had married Mary Ann Turville, "by banns" at Guildford Parish Church on the 29th of April 1827.
Enlisted at Guildford on the 14th of December 1854.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial, imprisoned from the 11th of November — 3rd of February 1858 and to forfeit all previous service.
Deserted from Aldershot on the 16th of March 1858 and rejoined the regiment on the 25th of February 1860.
Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and sentenced to be marked with a letter "D" on the left breast, to lose 40 days previous service and imprisoned from the 25th of February — 12th of May 1860.
Appointed to Shoeing-Smith on the 13th of November 1860.
Discharged from Dublin on the 20th of October 1863.
"Medically unfit for H.M.'s service — Paralysis — the disease did not occur prior to enlistment — the result of intoxicating liquor. Paralysis of the right side is confirmed and persistent. Will be unable and incapable of pursuing his trade as a farrier."
