Birth & early life

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dublin on the 19th of December 1840.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: None shown.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 5th of February 1848.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 18th of May 1849.

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Wilson Kennedy" on the 2nd of May 1854.

From Private to Corporal: 28th of October 1854.

Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of November 1854.

He is shown on a nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 15th of September.

Invalided to England aboard the SS "Great Britain" between the 12 and 30th of December 1855.

Died at Portsmouth on the 12th of April 1856.

From his death certificate he died at the Garrison Hospital, Portsea Town, from "Abcess. Certified." aged 32 years [sic] his occupation being that of a Sergeant, 8th Hussars.

An Alex Sinclair of the Garrison Hospital was in attendance at his death. (See copy of this in the "Certificates" file.)

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, and Sebastopol.

Death & burial

Died at Portsmouth on the 12th of April 1856.
