1104, Sergeant Edward Thomas SEWELL — 8th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born in London.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London (Westminster) on the 18th of September 1849.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Veterinary-surgeon.

From Private to Corporal:16th of March 1851.

Letter sent by Orderly Dragoon; Horse Guards:

"14th of April 1852.

Sir, — It being understood that Corporal Edward Sewell of the 8th Hussars is a necessary witness for the prosecution on the trial before a District Court-martial about to be assembled at Newbridge on the man named in the margin [Private William Thomas Ruddy, 1st Dragoon Guards] who is be charged, amongst other things, that he, whilst in a state of desertion from his regiment, enlisted into the 8th Hussars under the name of Davis between the 29th of January and the 5th April 1852.

I have the Commander-in-Chief's command to desire that Corporal Sewell is forthwith to repair to Newbridge with as little delay as possible to Newbridge for the purpose in question, according to the route herewith transmitted.

The Officer Commanding the 8th Hussars, I am, etc. etc.,

Hounslow. J. Brown, AG."

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Medora" on the 27th of April 1854. Corporal to Sergeant: 19th of June 1854.

In Scutari Hospital from the 16th of September 1854 and rejoined the regiment on the 20th of October.

Severely wounded in action at Balaclava and sent to Scutari on the 26th of October 1854.

Died, "of his wounds", at Scutari on the 26th of December 1854.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled (according to the medal rolls) to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma and Sebastopol only.

Although not shown on the Balaclava clasp roll, he was most certainly entitled to this, but certainly not to the Inkerman clasp which appeared on his medal in later years.
