On "furlo" from the 10th of January — 9th of February 1849
Discharged from Chatham (no reason given) on the 10th of March 1849.
Re-enlisted at London into the 7th Hussars for the 8th, on the 12th of January 1855.

He is shown on a nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 4th of November.

Discharged, "invalided" from Dublin on the 24th of November 1856.
"Has Phthisis Pulmonia [sic?] — is attributable to cold and exposure when serving with the 82nd Regiment in America and subsequently aggravated by exposure to the same cause at Ismid, Turkey."

No documentary evidence can be found of his ever having actually served with the 82nd Foot in North America and from a comparison of the dates of the happenings during his service with it, most unlikely.
A brother, Thomas Smallwood, of the 4th Dragoon Guards was permitted to transfer to the 8th Hussars as No 1738, "to serve with elder brother " on the 27th of March 1855. He did not serve in the Crimea, but was in India for the Mutiny campaign, dying at Gwalior on the 18th of June 1858.
