Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Margaret's, King's Lynn, Norfolk,

Enlistment

Enlisted at King's Lynn on the 27th of November 1854.

Age: 24.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Farrier.

Dark complexion. Hazel eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

Sent to Scutari on the 1st of January 1856, invalided to England aboard the "Simla" on the 20th of February and was at the Chatham Invalid Depot from the 8th of March.

Transferred to the 5th Battalion of the Military Train on the 1st of June and appointed as Assistant-Farrier on the 5th of June 1857.

"Absent without leave," 21-25 of January. Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and imprisoned from the 31st of January - 27th of March 1859.

"Deserted" from Dublin on the 1st of June and rejoined on the 13th of February 1860.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial, imprisoned from the 15-16 of February 1860 and to forfeit all previous service of 4 years 139 days.

This was, however, restored by War Office Authority, dated the 15th of January 1867.

Appointed to Shoeing-Smith on the 19th of April 1868.

Re-engaged at Woolwich for a further 12 year period of service on the 30th of September 1869.

Transferred to the Army Service Corps (Transport Department) on the 21st of February 1870. Regimental No. 372.

Promoted to Farrier-Corporal on the 21st of June 1867.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Aldershot on the 21st of January 1867.

"Having claimed discharge after termination of second period of limited engagement."

In Turkey and the Crimea: 8 months.,

Conduct: "good".

In possession of four Good Conduct badges.

Six times entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Twice tried by Court-martial.

Aged 46 years 1 month on discharge.

To live at No. 1 Manor Place, Jackson Street, Woolwich.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with one clasp and the Turkish Medal.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Next of kin: Wife, Hannah Tyzack. Shown on the Regimental "Married roll" from the 1st of January 1861. They had two children by the 31st of March, 1868.

1881 Census

The 1881 Census Return shows him as living at No. 19 Nelson Street, West Ham. Essex, aged 51, a Night Watchman, born at Lynn, Norfolk, with his wife, Hannah, aged 42, born in Leinster, Ireland, and five children, all born in the different military stations in which he served.
