Birth & early life

Born at Pershore, near Worcester.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Birmingham on the 16th of December 1843.

Age: 21.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Basket-maker.

Features: Fair complexion. Hazel eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

The musters for July-September 1858 show no particular service movement during the whole of the period.

Served in action against the rebels at Zeerapore on the 29th of December 1858 and at Baroda on the 1st of January 1859.

A board sat at Morar, India, on the 30th of September 1859, "to consider his request for discharge".

On passage to England from the 10th of December 1859, and at the Maidstone Depot from the 12th of April 1860.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Maidstone on the 19th of April 1860, allowed at "own request" and being eligible for a "deferred pension upon reaching the age of 50 years", under the Royal Warrant of the 1st of July 1848.

Served 15 years 136 days.

Conduct: "very good."

In possession of three Good Conduct badges.

Once tried by Court-martial, and imprisoned from the 20th of March - 7th of September 1847.

Aged 36 years 9 months on discharge.

To live in Boxmoor, Hemel Hempstead, on discharge.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Balaclava, Inkerman, Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Mutiny medal without clasp.
