Born at Layston, near Huntingford, Herts.

1841 Census

High Street, Herts.

Henry Wren, 5, and 5 other siblings [3months to 8 years] born to Richard, 35, a Maltster, & wife Sarah. [CP]

1851 Census

High Street, Layston, Buntingford.

Richard & Sarah, 46, malster & coal merchant.

Six children are shown, including Henry 15, and 5 siblings [from 3 to 12 years]. [CP]

Enlistment

Enlisted at Brighton on the 7th of November 1854.

Age: 21.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Grocer.

Features: Fair complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea from Brighton on the 20th of July 1855. Transferred to the 12th Lancers at Cahir on the 12th of August 1856. Regimental No. 1861.

Served under Brig. William Hill in the Bennar Field Force, 16th of November 1858 — 16th of March 1859. Also present at the battle of Chichumba, 18th of January 1859.

Discharge & pension

Discharged "by purchase", from Aldershot on the 20th of June 1863. Payment of £20.

Served 10 years 110 days.

Conduct: "very good." In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal

Mutiny medal without clasp.

Awarded a Special Campaign Pension (no date shown, but would have been around 1893 when these pensions were instigated.)
