1295, Private Caleb WYATT — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born at Banbury, Oxfordshire. He was christened at Adderbury on the 18th of January 1834, the son of John and Anna Wyatt.

1841 Census

Adderbury East.

John Wyatt, 55, Carrier, and wife Hannah.

Eight children are shown, from 9 months to 26 years. Caleb was 6 at this time. [CP]

1851 Census

Adderbury East.

John Wyatt, 65, widower, late carrier.

Two sons shown: Edmund 24, and Caleb 14, Labourer, born Adderbury. [CP]

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 3rd of August 1854.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Clerk.

Features: Fair complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 20th of June 1855.

From Private to Corporal: 25th of March 1856.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 5th of February 1857.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. Great Britain on the 8th of October 1857.

The musters for July-September 1858 show no particular service movement during the whole of the period.

Sent to Bombay on the 9th of December 1860, and was on passage to England from the 4th of February 1861.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "invalided", from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 2nd of July 1861:

"Unfit for further service — On the march to Gwalior in 1859 the disease for which I recommend his discharge (Colitis) first became apparent. He has also greatly suffered from rheumatism here in England and from attacks of intermittent fever in India."

Served 6 years 137 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 10 months. In India: 3 years.

Conduct: "very good." In possession of one Good Conduct badge. Once tried by Court-martial.

Imprisoned from the 31st of August — 4th of September 1857.

Granted a further pension of 7d. per day "conditional" for two years and he was awarded a further "conditional" pension of 7d. per day from the 9th of March 1865 to the 6th of March 1866.

To live at No. 111 Drummer Street, Euston Square, London.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with a clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal

Can find no trace on the Mutiny medal roll.
