1293, Private Francis Lucas WALSHE — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born in Sligo, Ireland.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dublin on the 12th of October 1846.

Age: 22.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Clerk.

Fair complexion. Blue eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Invalided to England on the 13th of June 1855.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 1st of January 1857:

"Unfit for further service from lameness of right ankle caused by a blow from a horse whilst on duty in the Crimea".

A letter was sent to the Commanding Officer of the Regiment requesting further details as to the origin of this disability, to which the Regiment replied:

"During the campaign in the Crimea I never heard that this man had been wounded or injured on duty and I believe that his ankle, or foot, was originally injured in England previous to the Eastern campaign, but he was fit for duty in 1854."

Served 9 years 329 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year.

Conduct: "a good soldier" — although tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 19th of May 1848 and sentenced to 28 days imprisonment with hard labour and also by a Regimental Court-martial on the 12th of July 1851 and sentenced to 14 days imprisonment, with hard labour.

In possession of one Good Conduct badge.

Aged 32 years 6 months on discharge.

He was granted a pension of 7d. per day for a period of two years.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol.
