Birth & early life

Born at Westbury, Wiltshire, and baptised there on the 19th of April 1833, the son of James and Betty Watts.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Hampton Court on the 9th of August 1851.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Clerk.

Service

Enlisted at Hampton Court on the 9th of August 1851.

Trade: Clerk.

Appointed to Paymaster's Clerk (as Sergeant) on the 1st of November 1854.

A nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, shows him as being On Duty there as the Paymaster's Clerk from the 4th of November.

Reduced to Duty Sergeant: 1st of July 1856.

Appointed to Orderly Room Clerk on the 26th of August 1856.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "by purchase", from Cahir on the 17th of October 1861. Payment of £10.

Served 10 years 69 days.

Conduct: "good". Equal to two Good Conduct badges.

Granted a Special Campaign pension (no date shown).

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.
