1531, Private John WEBSTER — 8th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born in Wigan, Lancashire.

Enlisted into the 4th Royal Lancashire Militia on the 20th of December 1854. Allowed to re-enlist into the 8th Light Dragoons [sic] at Wallingford, Lancashire, on the 22nd of December 1854.

Age 17 years 6 months.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Collier.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 15th of July 1855.

Transferred to the Depot of the Military Train on the 31st of January 1857. Regimental No. 1360.

"Absent without leave," 29th of August — 2nd of September.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and imprisoned, 3rd of September — 9th of October 1859.

Confined "by order of the Commanding Officer", 2nd of March — 4th of May 1859, and again from the 31st of May — 6th of June 1863.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from the Curragh Camp on the 8th of January 1863, as:

"Unfit for further service from Phthisis Pulmonary. the symptoms show slight improvement, but he will never be able to contribute towards earning his own livelihood at his former occupation — that of a collier."

Served 8 years 51 days. In Turkey and the Crimea. 9 months.

Conduct: "good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Eight times entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Once tried by Court-martial.

Aged 26 years 6 months on discharge.

To live at No. 23 Warrington Lane, Wigan, Lancashire.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with one clasp and the Turkish Medal.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Granted a pension of 6d. per day for a period of two years from the 12th of January 1864 to the 1st of February 1866.

He was living in the Preston Pension District in 1866.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
