OH! PANTALOONS OF CHERRY.

Dedicated without permission to the EARL OF CARDIGAN

Anon, Punch, 1854?

On, pantaloons of cherry!

Oh, redder than raspberry!

For men to fight in things so tight

It must be trying — very.

'Gainst wear, though fine the weather,

They would not hold together,

On saddle-back they'd fly and crack,

Though seated with black leather.

Oh, welcome declaration!

That timely reformation

The soldiers brave from galls will save

Without that decoration.

In overalls more spacious,

If crimson, still capacious,

The bold Hussar will rush to war.

Lord Cardigan is gracious!

Eleventh! — gallant fellows —

In cherries, blues, and yellows

More amply made, with sharpened blade,

Go where BELLONA bellows.

And though with colours glaring,

Your uniform be flaring,

You'll be no less than by your dress

Conspicuous for your daring.
