The Charge of the Light Brigade went down in history
A daring feat of valour such as you will ever see.
There were 600 horses, there were 600 men,
Who rode down the valley but never back again.
The cannons roared, the cannons boomed,
In front and left and right of them,
They knew that they were doomed.
But they kept on riding, though, they kept on riding,
They kept on riding at the foe.
The men of the Light Brigade came down the valley straight,
With sabres bared and flashing bright they made the Russians quake.
There were 600 horses, there were 600 men,
Who rode down the valley but never back again.
The cannons roared, the cannons boomed,
In front and left and right of them,
They knew that they were doomed.
But they kept on riding, though, they kept on riding,
They kept on riding at the foe.
A blunder it was indeed to send them to this hell.
They had no choice but do or die amongst the shot and shell.
There were 600 horses, there were 600 men,
Who rode down the valley but never back again.
The cannons roared, the cannons boomed,
In front and left and right of them,
They knew that they were doomed.
But they kept on riding, though, they kept on riding,
They kept on riding at the foe.
I am not sure that Roger Whittaker wrote this, but according to his website (www.rogerwhittaker.com) this was his first single, recorded c.1962 while he was still a student (Roger Whittaker: The Early Years (accessed 26.5.2018). It also appeared on his album Steel Men (2013). It can be heard online at YouTube.com/watch?v=vu1nHdiMpts (accessed 26.5.2018).
