'To T. H. Roberts
158 Fleet Street
Dear Sir,
We the survivors of the Light Cavalry Charge at Balaclava desire to record our deep sense of the warm hearted hospitality extended to us upon the occasion of Her Most Gracious Majesty's Diamond Jubilee.
The noble spirit which prompted you to give some happiness to those, many of whom would otherwise have been excluded from all participation in the National festivities, does equal and infinite honour to your head and heart.
We find words inadequate to give expression to our feelings in parting from so kind a friend, but dear Sir, you may be assured that the memory of your generous and patriotic action will remain with everyone of us until the last hour of our lives.
That you and yours may long enjoy the blessings of health and prosperity is the earnest hope of every survivor of The Charge privileged to be present as your guest.
We subscribe ourselves, Dear Sir, your obliged and faithful friends.'
Followed by the signatures, in black ink, of 65 Light Brigade survivors.
