Birth & early life

Born at Coleshill, near Birmingham, c.1837.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Aston, Birmingham on the 6th of January 1855.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Bricklayer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 14th of June 1855.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Aldershot "time expired", on the 11th of January 1867. Conduct: "good".

In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

Re-enlisted into the 8th Hussars at Manchester in the 17th of October 1867. Regimental No. 1129.

Re-engaged at Manchester for a further 9 years' service on the 2nd of November 1867.

Former service in the 4th Light Dragoons allowed to reckon, by War Office letter dated the 19th of December 1867.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Aldershot on the 10th of October 1876.

"Claimed, after second period of 12 years' service."

Served 20 years 357 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year.

Aged 39 years 8 months on discharge.

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of four Good Conduct badges.

Received 1d. extra per day for "Good swordsmanship."

Granted a pension of 1/- per day.

14 times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with the clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish Medal.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.

Commemorations

Life after service

He sad he intended to live at 11, Coleshill Street, Birmingham, after discharge.
