Birth & early life

Born at Brompton, London, c.1819.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Hendon on the 24th of April 1840.

Age: 20 years 9 months.

Height: 5' 6". Trade Gardener.

Sallow complexion. Grey eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Attested by John McVeagh, later Hospital Sergeant

At the Maidstone Depot from the 29th of April 1840 and embarking for India on the 3rd of June 1841, joined the regiment on the 28th of October 1841.

Invalided to England on the 16th of June 1855.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 30th of October 1855.

"Unfit for further service from broken-down constitution — the result of secondary syphilis aggravated by service in the Crimea."

Served 15 years 156 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 11 months.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of three Good Conduct badges.

He was granted a pension of 9d. per day for three years and this was made permanent on the 8th of October 1858. Refused a further increase on the 6th of December 1859.

Living in Deptford, London, after discharge.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.
