Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Luke's, Chelsea, c.1833.

1841 Census

7 Queens Head Walk, Tower Hamlets, St Leonards, Shoreditch.

Six children shown: Sarah, 12, Elizabeth, 10, Frederick, 8, Louisa, 6, Alfred, 3, Josiah, 1.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 23rd of July 1854.

No other enlistment details apart from his trade as a painter are shown.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

"Deserted" from Brighton on the 7th of March 1859.

Can find no further trace to March of 1875.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Some rolls show him as "McClew."

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
