Birth & early life

Born in Liverpool, c.1836.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Liverpool on the 15th of November 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 5".

Trade: French-polisher.

Appearance: Fair complexion. Brown eyes. Black hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

Transferred to the 1st Bn. Military Train on the 31st of October 1856. Regimental No. 648.

From Private to Corporal: 6th of January 1857.

Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of February 1858:

"Under arrest", 7th-9th of September. In the Prison Hospital, 10th-28th of September, in Military Prison custody, 29-30 of September and reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 4th of October 1858.

Transferred to the 2nd Bn. 6th of January 1857.

Sent to Chatham Invalid Depot on the 26th of May 1861.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Depot on the 11th of November 1861, "By reason of chronic enlargement of both testicles through being thrown onto the saddle of his horse whilst at drill, on the 18th of April 1860."

Conduct: "good". In possession of one Good Conduct badge. Once tried by Court-martial.

He was granted a pension of 7d. per day for a period of two years.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.
