881, Private Charles MITTON — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born at Naseby, c.1827.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Coventry on the 18th of September 1846.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Weaver.

Service

He had originally enlisted into the 17th Lancers under the name of Christopher Meekins. He then surrendered as a deserter from the 56th Foot and was a prisoner from the 10-20 of October 1850. Released without trial upon volunteering to serve in the 17th Lancers and was allowed to resume his real name. Authority of the War Office, letter dated the 22nd of October 1850.

Rode with No. 4 Troop. (T.S.M. O'Hara.) See copy in the Troop muster roll in the 17th Lancer "Scrapbook".

Next of kin: his mother, Ann Mitton, living in Market Harborough, Leicestershire.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava and Sebastopol.

Death & burial

Killed in action at Balaclava.
