1214, Private George SMITH — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born in the parish of Ransbury, near Marlborough, Wiltshire.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Reading on the 18th of April 1854.

Age: 19 years 1 month.

Height: 5' 9".

Trade: Labourer.

Features: Fresh complexion. Brown eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 29th of April 1855.

On the rear party when leaving the Crimea, attached to the 8th Hussars and returning with them to England. 25th of April — 15th of May 1856.

Tried for "absence" and imprisoned from the 26th of June — 14th of August 1857.

Sent to the Depot at Canterbury on the 1st of October 1857.

Deserted on the 6th of October and rejoined the Depot on the 23rd of May 1859. Confessed himself as a deserter whilst in confinement, "Not claimed".

In a Military Prison from the 23rd of May 1859 — 20th of June 1860 until being placed in Provost charge from the 21-30 of June and released in order to embark for India.

From the Depot to India, arriving at Madras on the 10th of October and joining the regiment on the 16th of October 1860.

Transferred to the 18th Hussars on the 30th of November 1864 and joined this regiment, with his wife, on the 28th of January 1865. Regimental No. 1233.

Re-engaged for 12 years further service on the 7th of December 1867.

From Private to Corporal: 24th of August 1869.

Corporal to Sergeant 3rd of January 1874

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Colchester on the 3rd of May 1874, as "Claimed, on termination of second period of engagement".

Served 21 years 46 days. He had forfeited all of his previous service by his conviction for desertion (3 years 21 days) but this was restored by a War Office letter dated the 10th of March 1866.

In Turkey and the Crimea 1 year. In India: 15 years 3 months.

Conduct: "very good."

In possession of three Good Conduct badges when promoted and would now have had four. Five times entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book, Twice tried by Court-martial.

Possesses the 1st Class Certificate of Education.

Aged 42 years 6 months, on discharge.

Medals & commemorations

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean and Turkish medals.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Life after service

To live, c/o Messrs Spiers and Pond, London.

Further information

The India Office records show a daughter, Grace Evangaline, as being born to him and his wife, Ann Maria, at Secunderbad on the 16th of July 1862 and was baptised in the Scotch Church on the 10th of August by the Revd. A.E. Bell, Asst. Chaplain.
