Born in London.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Hounslow on the 20th of December 1853.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Tailor.

No other physical details are shown.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 1st of October 1855.

Reduced to Private, on the "Reduction of the Regiment", on the 25th of May 1856.

From Private to Corporal: 2nd of September 1857.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

The musters for July-September 1858 only show him as being at Poorandluir during September of the period.

Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of June 1859.

Appointed to Troop Sergeant Major on the 15th of July 1865.

Re-engaged at Colchester for a further 12-year term of service on the 9th of February 1866.

Marriage registered

Samuel Tiggle married Ann Hudson, September Quarter 1867, Shoreditch.

Shown on the the Regimental "Married Roll" from the 16th of July 1867. His wife is named as Ann Tiggle.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dublin on the 1st of September 1873, "to go to the Yorkshire Hussars Yeomanry Cavalry."

Awarded a pension of 2/- per day.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman, Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Can find no trace on the Mutiny medal roll.

Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 7th of February 1872, with a gratuity of £5.

Commemorations

Attended the first Balaclava Banquet in 1875.

Member of the Balaclava Commemoration Society in 1879.

Signed the Loyal Address to the Queen in 1887.

A "W. Tiggel" is shown in a photograph taken at Alexandra Palace after the 1890 Balaclava Dinner. (There is a copy in the 17th Lancer file.)

At the Lord Mayor's Show on the 9th of November 1890, Sergeant Major Tiggel is shown travelling in the 15th carriage in the procession.

His wife is shown as Annie, aged 41 born at Greenwich, Kent.

A number of children are also listed:

Minnie, aged 9, born at Castlebar, Co. Mayo

Samuel William Tiggell, December Quarter 1893, Islington.

In an Address and Account Book formerly belonging to James W. Wightman when the latter was Secretary of the Balaclava Society, Samuel Tiggle's address is shown as being No. 101 Lancaster Street, Newington Causeway. London, S.E. His name was crossed through on the membership list as if "Deceased", but there is no indication as to just when.

Further information

His son, William Francis, married at Islington in September 1896, and daughter, Minnie, married in September 1899.
