1240, Corporal Thomas DUNN — 8th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Mary's, Stafford, Lincolnshire, c.1832.

Possibly the brother of 1241 George Frederick Dunn, 8th Hussars, who died in India. Notice they have consecutive enlistment numbers.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Nottingham on the 10th of December 1852.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 9".

Trade: Labourer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the HT "Mary Anne" on the 19th of April 1854.

At Scutari from the 1st of October — 29th of December 1854.

From Private to Corporal: 17th of January 1855.

Resigned to Private 16th of May 1855,.

Sent to Scutari on the 26th of July 1855.

He was Orderly to Major General Shewell, C. B. in early 1856.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the SS "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

From Private to Corporal: 13th of July 1861.

Corporal to Sergeant: 18th of December 1863.

Re-engaged for a further 12 years' service at York on the 5th of December 1864.

Appointed to Troop Sergeant Major on the 2nd of December 1870.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from York, "Free, after 21 years' service," on the 27th of January 1874.

Served 21 years 26 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 2 years and 2 months. East Indies, 6 years 1 month.

Aged 41 years 1 month on discharge.

Conduct and character: "has been very good".

In possession of two Good Conduct badges when promoted and would now have had five.

Twice entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Granted a pension of 2/6d. per day.

To live at Weedon after discharge, but he was living in Coventry in 1876.

Next of kin (in 1869): Wife, Mary Ann Dunn.

They were shown on the Regimental "Married roll" from the 26th of February 1867. There were four known children in the family by the 31st of March 1875.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal, clasps for Alma and Sebastopol, the Turkish Medal, and the Long Service & Good Conduct medals with gratuity.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma and Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Served at Kotah and Gwalior.

Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 5th of October 1871 with a gratuity of £5.
