Information has now been posted for most of the men, but for the moment only the records for the 13th Light Dragoons are fully accessible to read online. If you are interested in a man from one of the other regiments (4th Light Dragoons, 8th Hussars, 11th Hussars, 17th Lancers), contact the editors, Philip Boys & Roy Mills, and we will try to help.
This list aims to show all members of the five regiments of the Light Cavalry brigade known to have embarked for active service in the Crimean War between 1854 and 1856 — more than 3000 men. Of these, between 600 and 700 were in the Charge on 25th October 1854.
The list therefore includes a number of men who did not serve on Crimean soil, but whose names should nevertheless be recorded. For example, some died en route in Bulgaria, Turkey, or at sea; and a number remained at Scutari but were actively engaged.
The list also includes some names not recorded in official or published medal rolls but who research has revealed were on active service at camp in the Crimea or on the expedition to Eupatoria in October 1855. However, it does not include those who remained at the various depots of regiments back in England and Ireland.
Note: we are still adding to and checking entries it is remarkably easy to make transcription and other errors. If you spot any mistakes, or can contribute anything to the archive, please let us know — we would be very grateful.
