Birth & early life

Born at King's Lynn, Norfolk.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Liverpool on the 10th of November 1854.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: None. (Later, described as an Engineer).

Appearance: Dark complexion. Black eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

From Private to Corporal: 3rd of August 1858.

Corporal to Sergeant: 27th of June 1860.

Re-engaged for 12 years' further service at Colchester on the 5th of July 1866.

Sent to the Depot at Canterbury when the regiment went to India, 25th of July 1866.

Joined the regiment in India on the 23rd of April 1867.

Appointed to Troop Sergeant Major on the 1st of June 1867.

Attached to the Rookree Thomas College, Meerut, from the 1st of November 1868. Shown as "On Probation in the Department of Public Works — not transferred to the Un-attached List."

Transferred to the Un-attached List on the 1st of October 1870.

Shown as "Overseer, 1st Grade" from the 1st of October 1870.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.

Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 15th of July 1873 with a gratuity of £10.

His Long Service & Good Conduct medal only was in the "A.A. Payne" collection in 1911, but on the 19th of December 1913 a Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, T.M., and the Long Service & Good Conduct medal named to "Sergeant W. Hill. 11th Hussars." was sold at Glendining's, and again on the 28th of March 1920. The same group had also been sold at Sotheby's from the "Henry Barr" collection on the 21st of June 1906.
