Private Edward HOARE — 1839, 11th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born at Havant, Hampshire.

He was baptised at Havant on the 28th of January 1827, the son of Francis Hoare, a carpenter, and his wife Harriet. His parents were married at Havant on the 27th of July 1814 and had a total of nine children besides Edward. His father came from West Leigh, a hamlet about 1 mile north of Havant, and his mother, nee Binstead, from Havant. His mother was christened at Havant on the 13th of March 1793, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Binstead.

1851 Census

West Street, Havant.

Francis, 67, Carpenter, Journeyman.

Harriett, 57.

Four children shown: Edward 24, Bricklayer, John, 22, and William 19, George 16.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 30th of December 1854.

Age: 24.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Brick-layer.

Given his baptismal date, he would have been older on enlistment than his stated age of 24 years, being by then nearly 28 years of age.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

Death & burial

Died at Camp Kadikoi on the 7th of October 1855.

Buried in the 11th Hussar Cemetery on the road between Kadikoi and Karani.

There is a copy of an inscription on a once-erected memorial board there in the 11th Hussar file. His name was shown as "E. Hoar."

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.
