Birth & early life

Born at Lewes, Sussex.

[RM: In the 1841 Census he is shown as living in Chiddingly parish, Sussex, the son of Jno Holt, "Diss. [enting] Minister", and his wife Mary. He was one of seven children.

He is shown on the 1851 Census as Joseph C. Holt, living at "Lower Lake" in Battle, Sussex, a "Printer", a lodger in the house of an annuitant, Elizabeth Jannings. His age is shown as 20.]

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 24th of November 1852.

Age: 17.

Height: 5' 5".

Trade: Printer.

Service

Died, "on board ship, when going down to Scutari", on the 6th of February 1855.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.
