Birth & early life

Born in Dublin.

Enlistment

Enlisted into the 56th Foot at Cork on the 4th of August 1842. Regimental No. 2015.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Labourer.

Service

Transferred to the 17th Lancers at Birr on the 1st of November 1842.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

The musters for July-September of 1858 show him as being "On Field Service" during the whole of this period.

Served in the field at Rajghur and Mungrowlee with Captain William Gordon.

From a Military Prison, where he had been since the 3rd of September 1861, on the 17th of February 1862 and embarked for England on the 15th of March 1862.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Maidstone Depot on the 10th of July 1862 "With ignominy, for infamous conduct" and to forfeit the whole of his previous service."

Conduct and character: "Bad." Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman, Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Mutiny medal without clasp.

From the Returned Medal Book "Mutiny medal returned to the Mint. No trace of issue."

Further information

Thomas Morley in his "Memoirs" states that T.S.M. O'Hara and his brother, James O'Hara, assisted him at the battle of Inkerman in bringing out Cornet Clevland, who later died of his wounds. (See copy in the "Memoirs" file.)
