Embarked for the Crimea on the 4th of September 1855 and arrived in the Crimea at Balaclava as part of a draft of 50 men under the command of Lt. Robert MacNeill, on the 29th of September 1855. Served in Eupatoria.
Died at Scutari on 17th of November 1855 in the General Hospital.
Entitled to Crimean medal without clasp, and the Turkish Medal.

[RM: Stephen Samways's brother Hugh was also in the regiment, but did not serve in the Crimea. He later transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the Military Train on 1st of November 1856 with the Regimental number 940, and served in the Indian Mutiny. He was entitled to a Mutiny medal with clasps for "Relief of Lucknow" and "Lucknow".]
