Birth & early life

Born in Middlesex.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 1st of August 1854.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Green-grocer.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 20th of June 1855.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

The musters for July-September of 1858 show him as being "On Field Service" during the whole of this period.

Served in the field at Rajghur and Mungrowlee with Captain William Gordon.

From Private to Corporal: 1st of December 1860.

Corporal to Sergeant: 30th of July 1862.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 21st of November 1863.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "by purchase" from Hounslow on the 21st of October 1868, upon a payment of £8.

Served 14 years 80 days.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

Was in receipt of 1d. per day allowance for "good swordsmanship and the lance exercise" during his service.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Mutiny medal without clasp.
