Birth & early life

Born c.1836.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 26th of June 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: None shown.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea on the 8th of April 1855 and joined the regiment on the 29th of April.

Is shown on a nominal roll of officers and men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 4th of July.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

The muster rolls for the July-September 1858 period show him as "On Field Service" from September.

Volunteered into the 18th Hussars on the 30th of November 1864. Regimental No. 1234.

Joined the regiment, with his wife, on the 28th of January 1865.

Embarked for England, en route from Secunderabad, aboard the "Isabella," on the 29th of August 1866.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "time expired", from Canterbury on the 1st of November 1866. Served 12 years 127 days.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

He re-enlisted, joining the 21st Hussars at London on the 14th of March 1867. Regimental No. 844.

Born at Laleham, near Staines, Middlesex.

Age: 31 years 3 months.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Labourer.

Features: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Former service in the 17th Lancers and the 18th Hussars allowed to reckon towards pension, per War Office Authority, dated the 27th of March 1867.

Finally Discharged, "Free, at his own request after 21 years service," from Aldershot on the 12th of March 1878."

Conduct and character: "very good."

In possession of five Good Conduct badges.

Service to count, 21 years 155 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year

In India: 11 years 53 days.

Aged 40 years 8 months on discharge.

To live in London Road, Staines, Middlesex.

Granted a pension of 1/1d. per day.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Can find no trace on the Mutiny medal roll.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal, clasp for Sebastopol, Turkish, and the Long Service and Good Conduct medals.

Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 29th of March 1873, with a gratuity of £5.

Life after service

1881 Census

The 1881 Census shows him as living at Frog Island, Egham, Middlesex, a Labourer in a Linoleum Works, aged 45, born at Staines, with his wife, Rebecca, aged 33, born at SE Cambia, India, and six children, aged from 17 years to 7 months, the four eldest being born in India, Colchester and Aldershot.
