2080 James HOLLIDAY — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born at Richmond, Surrey, and was christened in the Church of St. Mary Magdalen at Richmond on the 1st of May 1825, the son of John Holliday and Maria Holland.

Enlisted into the 14th Light Dragoons at Heston on the 8th of April 1841.

Regimental No. 832.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 11".

Trade: Labourer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 11th of August 1843.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial for "absence without leave" and reduced to Private on the 31st of December 1843.

From Private to Corporal: 20th of April 1848.

Corporal to Sergeant: 13th of June 1848.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 26th of June 1849 and reduced to Private for;

(1) "Being absent from Stables when Orderly Sergeant"

(2) "Allowing two prisoners to escape from the Guard-Room."

Transferred to the 3rd Light Dragoons at Simla, India, on the 1st of December 1852. Regimental No. 2117.

Tried by a District Court-martial and imprisoned from the 24th of May — 1st of October 1854.

Transferred to the 4th Light Dragoons and promoted to Corporal on the same day, per War Office Authority, dated the 2nd of March 1855.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea from England on the 14th of June 1855.

From Corporal to Sergeant: 22nd of July 1855.

From Brigade Orders, Camp Eupatoria, dated the 20th of October 1855;

"Sergeant Halliday, 4th Light Dragoons, will act as Hospital Sergeant to the Brigade Hospital, with the usual pay and allowances."

"In confinement," and tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 4th of December 1855 for "being drunk before embarkation for England..." Sentenced to be reduced to Pte.

Tried by Court-martial at Aldershot on the 20th of July 1857 for "Disorderly Conduct" and sentenced to 84 days' imprisonment with hard labour.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 22nd of November 1859.

"Unfit for further service. Has suffered for one year from varicose veins of the right thigh. Disease may be attributed in part to riding."

Aged 37 years 7 months on discharge.

Served 17 years 315 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year. India,11 years 3 months.

Conduct and character: "A bad soldier." Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

He was granted a pension of 6d. per day for three years.

To live C/o. Mrs. Holliday [whether wife or mother is not shown], living in Richmond, Surrey.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Also to the Punjab medal with clasps for Chilianwala and Goojerat. Served during the whole of the campaign in the Punjab up to the occupation of Peshwar.
