Birth & early life

Born at Chester.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Newbridge on the 9th of December 1849.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Labourer.

Tried by a District Court-martial at Nottingham on the 2nd of April 1853 for "insubordinate and outrageous conduct". Sentenced to 50 lashes and 12 months imprisonment, with hard labour, but three months of this sentence were remitted.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Medora" on the 27th of April 1854.

He is shown on a nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 4th of November."

Confined" from the 31st of March and tried by a District Court-martial on the 15th of April 1856. Given 50 lashes.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "as a bad character, from Civil Gaol", on the 31st of December 1856.

Served 5 years 301 days, to count.

Conduct: "Bad". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.
