Born at Cheltenham — 8th Hussars

Enlistment

Enlisted at Cheltenham on the 27th of December 1842.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Farmer.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 18th of May 1846.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and reduced to Private on the 30th of August 1848.

From Private to Corporal: 31st of August 1849.

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Shooting Star" on the 25th of April 1854.

At Scutari from the 22nd of September 1854 and rejoined the regiment in the Crimea on the 3rd of October 1854.

From Corporal to Sergeant: 19th of June 1854'

Confined, 19th of October 1854. Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 21st of October 1854 and reduced to Private for being "drunk on duty."

Killed-in-action at Balaclava.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Balaclava and Sebastopol.

Commemorations

According to the "Crimean Veterans" page of the website http://glosters.tripod.com/crimeodds.htm (accessed 5.7.2013) there is a memorial to Edmund Herbert at St Matthew's, Twigworth, Gloucestershire:

"To the memory of Edmund Herbert of the Light Brigade, who fell at Balaclava on October 25th 1854, son of Samuel and Emilia Herbert late of this parish and uncle of John Henry Roberts."

Killed-in-action at Balaclava, 25th of October 1854.
